DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Eurycea neotenes occurs in scattered locations north of San Antonio, Texas.
LEGAL STATUS: Eurycea neotenes is listed by the State of Texas as a Threatened Species.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Eurycea neotenes (Bishop and Wright, 1937)
Genus: Eurycea, probably honors Eurydice — although Rafinesque only wrote “Mythological” (Greek) – Eurydice was the wife of Orpheus.
Species: neotenes, Greek – neotes = youth + –enos = pertaining to — ref. sexual maturity while in larval stage
