DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Eurycea troglodytes occurs only in Texas in Bandera, Edwards, Gilespie, Kerr, Medina, Real and Uvalde Counties.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Eurycea troglodytes (Baker, 1957)
Genus: Eurycea, probably honors Eurydice — although Rafinesque only wrote “Mythological” (Greek) – Eurydice was the wife of Orpheus.
Species: troglodytes, Greek – trogle = a hole made by gnawing + dytes = burrower — from which was coined the French word troglodytes meaning dwellers in caves — prob. ref. habitat
