DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Gastrophryne olivacea occurs throughout much of Texas, and in southern Arizona. In addition, there is a small, isolated population in southwestern New Mexico.

LEGAL STATUS: Gastrophryne olivacea is listed as an Endangered Species in the state of New Mexico. This species is not protected in either Texas or Arizona.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Gastrophryne olivacea (Hallowell – 1857)
Genus: GastrophryneGreek – gastros = belly + phryne = toad — pres. ref. to pot belly
Species: olivacea, Latin – being olive green in color — ref. characteristic olivaceous dorsum
