MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Heloderma suspectum suspectum (Cope – 1869)
Genus: HelodermaGreek – helos = a nail or stud + derma = skin – ref. beaded or studded rough skin
Species/Subspecies: suspectum,  Latin = mistrusted or suspected — ref. venomous nature which was suspected but not proven at time of naming
