DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Heterodon n. nasicus has a somewhat spotty distribution throughout east and southeast Texas westward through the Texas Hill Country and northward throughout the Texas Panhandle. Further west, it can be found throughout the eastern 2/3 of New Mexico.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Heterodon nasicus kennerlyi (Baird & Gerard – 1852)
Genus: Heterodon, Greek – heteros = different + odontos = tooth – ref. elarged posterior maxillary teeth
Species/ Subspecies: nasicus, Latin – nasica = large or pointed nose
