DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Hyla squirella occurs in east and southeast Texas and southward along the Texas Gulf Coast to Kleberg County. There is also an isolated record of this species in Cameron County, Texas.

Genus: Hyla, Greek – honors Hylas, companion of Hercules — ref. incessant cry
Species: squirella, English = squirrel + Latin –ella diminutive “little” — poss. allusion to the chattering call
