DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Hypopachus variolosus occurs only in south Texas from Goliad and Refugio Counties southward to the Mexican border.
LEGAL STATUS: Hypopachus variolosus is listed as a Threatened Species by the State of Texas.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Hypopachus variolosus (Cope – 1866)
Genus: Hypopachus, Greek – hypo = under, beneath or lesser + pachos = thickness
Species: variolosus, Latin – variola = full of small spots, like small pox — ref. pattern
