MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Kinosternon subrubrum hippocrepis (Gray – 1855)
Genus: Kinosternon, Greek – kineo = move + sternon = chest, breast — ref. their ability to move lower shell
Species: subrubrum, Latin – sub = below + rubrum = red – ref. orange-red plasteron of hatchlings
Subspecies: hippocrepis, Greek – hippos = horse + krepis = shoe — ref. to pattern of head stripe
