DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Lampropeltis c. calligaster occurs only in the eastern half of Texas, including the eastern portion of the Texas panhandle.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Lampropeltis calligaster calligaster (Harlan – 1827)
Genus: Lampropeltis, Greek – lampros = shining, beautiful + pelta = small shield – ref. smooth shiny dorsal scales typical of the genus
Species/Subspecies: calligaster, Greek – kalos = beauty + gaster = belly
