DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Lampropeltis p. knoblochi occurs in southwestern New Mexico and throughout the Madrean highlands of southern Arizona south of the Mogollan Rim.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Lampropeltis pyromelana knoblochi (Taylor – 1940)
Genus: LampropeltisGreek – lampros shining, beautiful + pelta = small shield – ref. smooth shiny dorsal scales typical of the genus
Species: pyromelana, Greek – pyrrh= flame colored + melaina = black
Subspecies: knoblochi, honors Dr. Fred Knobloch
