DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Lampropeltis t. amaura occurs in scattered populations throughout the eastern third of Texas including the Gulf Coast barrier islands as far south as Corpus Christi where it appears to intergrade with Lampropeltis t. annulata.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Lampropeltis triangulum amaura (Cope 1860)
Genus: Lampropeltis, Greek – lampros = shining, beautiful + pelta = small shield – ref. smooth shiny dorsal scales typical of the genus
Species: triangulum, Latin– tri= three + angulum = angle or corner – ref. angle feature of pattern on head of type specimen
Subspecies: amaura, Greek – amauros = dark
