DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Lampropeltis t. annulata occurs only in the central and southern portions of Texas, including the Gulf Coast barrier islands near Corpus Christi where it appears to intergrade with Lampropeltis t. amaura.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Lampropeltis triangulum annulata (Kennicot – 1860)
Genus: Lampropeltis, Greek – lampros = shining, beautiful + pelta = small shield – ref. smooth shiny dorsal scales typical of the genus
Species: triangulum, Latin– tri= three + angulum = angle or corner – ref. angle feature of pattern on head of type specimen
Subspecies: annulata, Latin – annulus = ringed
