DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Lithobates pipiens occurs in eastern California, central and northeastern Nevada, throughout the state of Utah and south into northern Arizona and northern and central New Mexico.
LEGAL STATUS: Lithobates pipiens is protected in Arizona, California and Nevada.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Lithobates pipiens (Schreber, 1782)
Genus: Lithobates, Greek – lithos = stone + bates = one that treads or climbs – ref. one that treads on rock or climbs rocks
Species: pipiens , Latin = peeping — collector heard Spring Peepers, collected this species thinking that the loud whistle came from the larger frog.
