DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Masticophis l. lateralis occurs in California from Siskiyou County in the north, eastward into the Sierra Nevada Mountains and foothills. it also occurs in southern California from the coast westward to the edges of the deserts and northward past the San Francisco Bay area back to Siskiyou County.

Genus: Masticophis, Greek – mastix = whip + ophis = snake, serpent
