DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Micrurus t. tener occurs throughout eastern, central and south Texas southward from a line extending roughly from Sherman to Sanderson.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Micrurus tener tener (Baird & Girard – 1853)
Genus: Micrurus, Greek – mikros = small + oura = tail
Species/Subspecies: tener, Latin – tenerum = tender, delicate or soft – “it is a more slender snake” with ref. to Micrurus fulvius
