DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Nerodia r. rhombifer occurs throughout the eastern 2/3 of Texas as far west as Val Verde County.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Nerodia rhombifer rhombifer (Howell – 1852)
Genus: Nerodia, Greek – honors Nereis, a Greek sea nymph
Species/Subspecies: rhombifer, Greek – rhombos = rectangular shaped + Latin – ifera = bearing – ref. diamond shaped dorsal pattern
