DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Notopthalmus v. louisianensis occurs throughout much of east and southeast Texas as far south as San Patricio County.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Notophthalmus meridionalis (Cope, 1880)
Genus: Notophthalmus, Greek – noto = mark + ophtalmus = eye — ref. eye spots on sides and back
Species: viridescens, Latin = slightly green — ref. common greenish color
Subspecies: louisianensis, belongs to the state of Louisiana — type locality, New Orleans, LA, l9l4
