DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Pantherophis g. intermontanus occurs only in eastern Utah near the Colorado border.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Pantherophis guttatus intermontanus (Baird & Girard – 1853)
Genus: Pantherophis, Greek – panther = panther + ophis = snake or serpent
Species: guttatus, Latin = spotted, speckled
Subspecies: intermontanus, Latin – inter = between + montanus = mountains
