DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Phrynosoma cornutum occurs throughout most of Texas, southern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona.

LEGAL STATUS: The state of Texas lists Phrynosoma cornutum as a Threatened Species. It is also the State Reptile of Texas.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Phrynosoma cornutum (Harlan – 1825)
Genus: PhrynosomaGreek – phrynos = toad + soma = body – ref. squat toad-like appearance
Species: cornutum, Latin = horned
