DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Plestiodon m. epipleurotus occurs from western Texas northwestward throughout central and northwestern New Mexico, northeastern Arzona, southeastern Nevada and southwestern Utah.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Plestiodon multivirgatus epipleurotus (Cope – 1880)
Genus: Plestiodon, Greek – plestios = many + odon = tooth or teeth
Species: multivirgatus, Latin – multi = many + virgatus = striped
Subsspecies: epipleurotus: Greek – epio = on or upon + pleuro = rib or side + tus = possession or fullness
