DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Scaphiopus couchii occurs in southeastern California, Southern Arizona, southern Arizona and throughout the western 2/3 of Texas.
LEGAL STATUS: Scaphiopus couchii is protected in California as a Species of Special Concern.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Scaphiopus couchii (Baird – 1854)
Genus: Scaphiopus, Greek – skaphis = shovel or spade + pous = foot — ref. shape and adaptation of hind foot for digging
