DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Spea hammondii occurs in California from the Mexican border north through the South Coast Ranges and northwest throughout the Central Valley.
LEGAL STATUS: Spea hammondii is protected in California as a Species of Special Concern.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Spea hammondii (Baird – 1859)
Genus: Spea, Greek – speos = cave, cavern, an opening
