DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Thamnophis e. elegans occurs in northern California with an isolated population located in the San Bernardino Mountains of southern California.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Thamnophis elegans elegans (Baird & Girard – 1853)
Genus: Thamnophis, Greek – thamnos = shrub or bush + ophis = snake, serpent
