DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Thamnophis e. vagrans occurs in central and northeastern Arizona, central and northwestern New Mexico, central and eastern Utah, northern Nevada and eastern central California.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Thamnophis elegans vagrans (Baird & Girard – 1853)
Genus: Thamnophis, Greek – thamnos = shrub or bush + ophis = snake, serpent
Species: elegans, Latin = fine, elegant
