DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Thamnophis hammondii occurs in California from Monterey County southward to the Mexican border, and eastward into the Transverse Mountain Ranges and the Peninsular Mountain Ranges.
LEGAL STATUS: Thamnophis hammondii is protected in California as a Species of Special Concern.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Thamnophis hammondi (Kennicott – 1860)
Genus: Thamnophis, Greek – thamnos = shrub or bush + ophis = snake, serpent
