DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Thamnophis rufipunctatus occurs in central and eastern Arizona and in southwestern New Mexico.
LEGAL STATUS: Thamnophis rufipunctatus is protected in Arizona and is listed as a Threatened Species by the State of New Mexico.
MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Thamnophis rufipunctatus (Cope – 1875)
Genus: Thamnophis, Greek – thamnos = shrub or bush + ophis = snake, serpent
Species: rufiounctatus, Latin – rufus = reddish + punctatus = spotted
