DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Thamnophis s. fitchi occurs in the northern half of California and eastern Nevada.

Genus: Thamnophis, Greek – thamnos = shrub or bush + ophis = snake, serpent
Species: sirtalis, Latin = like a garter
