DISTRIBUTION: In our region, Thamnophis c. ocellatus occurs only in the Edwards Plateau area of Central Texas.

MEANING OF SCIENTIFIC NAME: Thamnophis cyrtopsis ocellatus (Cope- 1860)
Genus: Thamnophis, Greek – thamnos = shrub or bush + ophis = snake, serpent
Species: cyrtopsis, Greek – cyrto = curved + opsis = having the appearance of – ref. posterior curvature of black nuchal splotches
Subspecies: ocellatus, Latin = spotted as with little eyes – ref. pattern on side of neck
